The Dutch Advertising Board rules that there is no such thing as “green” cruises

With our partners at Fossielvrij NL and Reclamejagers we filed a greenwashing complaint to the Dutch Stichting Reclame Code (SRC). Central to the complaint is MSC Cruises’ ‘For a greater Beauty’-campaign, which has been broadcasted in over 30 countries on TV and online.

In a decision published yesterday, the SRC ruled that MSC Cruises misled customers about the (negative) climate impact of cruising.

Claims made by MSC Cruises that liquefied natural gas (LNG) is "green" and "one of the cleanest fuels", are deemed misleading. Also, MSC Cruises should refrain from claims suggesting that the company is on its way towards net zero in 2050. According to the SRC, there is currently no realistic path for MSC Cruises to reach net zero in 2050.

The decision sends a clear message to policy makers and fossil companies claiming that LNG is a "clean" fuel and should be seen as an unavoidable "transition fuel".
